Star gooseberries, or nellikka, are small and intensely sour on their own, which makes them a natural fit for pickling. We cure them whole in gingelly oil with mustard seeds, fenugreek and a good amount of chilli, letting the sourness mellow slightly as the flavours settle in.

It is sharp and tangy with a real kick of heat behind it, closer to lemon pickle in character but with its own distinct sourness. A small piece alongside rice or curd rice is usually all you need to lift a plain meal.

Handmade in Kerala in small batches, with no artificial preservatives, colours or flavours.

Enjoy it with hot steamed rice, curd rice, or kanji for a comforting homemade meal, or pair it with chapati, paratha, and roti. It's equally good with dosa, idli, appam, or puttu at breakfast, or as a zesty side with sandwiches and wraps.
